How long can you keep food in the freezer? Discover our complete freezing guide covering meats, vegetables, cooked meals and practical tips to reduce food waste.

Just stocked up at FoodHero and wondering how long your food will keep in the freezer? Great news: freezing is one of the best ways to reduce food waste while saving money. You just need to know how long each type of food stays good!

Here's a practical guide to getting the most out of your freezer.

Why Freeze Your Food?

Freezing slows bacterial growth and preserves food quality far longer than the fridge. It's also a great way to make the most of surplus food — which is exactly what FoodHero is all about — without letting anything go to waste.

How Long Can You Keep Food in the Freezer?

🥩 Meat & Poultry

Beef cuts (roast, steak)                       6 to 12 months

Raw chicken (whole or pieces)           6 to 9 months

Ground meat (beef, pork, veal)           3 to 4 months

FoodHero Tip: Divide your meat into individual portions before freezing. That way, you only thaw exactly what you need!

🥦 Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits & vegetables (blanched)         Up to 1 year

FoodHero Tip: Blanch your vegetables (drop them in boiling water for 2–3 minutes, then into ice water) before freezing to preserve their colour, texture and nutrients.

🍽️ Cooked Meals & Baked Goods

Cooked meals                                      3 to 4 months

Baked goods                                        1 month

FoodHero Tip: Always label your containers with the freezing date. A piece of masking tape and a marker are all you need!

Best Practices for Freezing

  • Let food cool before freezing — never put a hot dish directly in the freezer, as it raises the internal temperature and affects surrounding food.
  • Follow the first in, first out rule — place older items at the front so you use them first.
  • Never refreeze thawed food — once defrosted, food must be consumed or cooked before it can be frozen again.

How to Thaw Safely

  • In the refrigerator: The safest method, ideal for meats and cooked meals. Allow 12 to 24 hours.
  • In cold water: Place the food in a sealed bag and submerge it in cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes.
  • In the microwave: Quick, but make sure to cook the food immediately afterward.
  • What to avoid: Never thaw food at room temperature on the counter, especially meats and dairy products.

Freeze More, Waste Less

At FoodHero, we believe that food rescued from the bin deserves to be fully enjoyed. Freezing is your best ally for extending the life of your groceries, cooking ahead and making sure nothing goes to waste. ❄️
